ROUTINE MAINTENANCE
|
WOODEN FURNITURE
Sanding the items to be treated is always recommended as it will remove stains, scratches and if necessary, the weathered surface.
Before application, remove any dust, water, dirt etc. from the setting with a lint free cloth
Use gloves when applying the oil and ensure there is adequate ventilation during use. Keep oil and clothing away from naked flames
Stir thoroughly, both before and during use. Apply with a lint free cloth. Wipe off any excess oil from the furniture after application
Another coat should be applied within a minimum of 4 - 6 months, depending on the level of exposure to the weather - i.e. furniture that is fully or partially exposed to sunlight may need 2 - 3 coats per year whereas if the furniture is kept under a fully covered area it should only need 1 coat per year.
Please note these application periods are meant as a guide only as the frequency of application will depend on the climate prevalent in your area and the appearance of the timber.
As the under surfaces are not exposed to the Sun, these can be ignored. Sanding will also remove surface stains and scratches and is advised before each oiling to further enhance the finish. Foam filled Sanding Pads are also recommended to ‘finish’ the surface before application of the oil thus ensuring a smooth ‘new’ feel.
Over the course of time it is possible to ‘read’ the wood’s condition and then judge what, if any, treatment is required. If it looks dry and is stained, now is the time to give it a light sanding and a treatment of oil
